The ninth lunar month has just begun. The lunar cycle is rebuilding from darkness, while the land stands in the first-harvest season.

Year Rune: Berkana ᛒ — Year 13
Renewal, growth, and the continuation of life. The project calendar confirms Year 13 as Berkana. 

Season: Lammas tide / first harvest. The great growth of summer is beginning to become something that can be cut, gathered, stored, possessed, and divided.

Historical Calendar: The important approaching feast is August 15, the Assumption / Lady Day in Harvest. The broader seasonal movement remains the first harvest. The project protocol specifically treats approaching observances as relevant when they affect the day’s movement. 

The Reckoning

Ur and Berkana meet strangely today.

Berkana holds the year in renewal and continued life. The young moon has only just returned, beginning another cycle of increase. But Ur brings something heavier into that renewal: physical strength, appetite, endurance and the power to take hold of what the growing world has produced.

And this is harvest.

What has grown freely through summer is becoming wealth. It can now be gathered. Divided. Claimed.

That is where Þjazi enters.

The old poets surround him with extraordinary descriptions: the Mountain Howler, the Ghost of the Giant Worlds, the Eloquent Woman’s Wolf, the swift wing-flapping King-Trickster. He is not presented as an empty or impoverished being. He is a mountain ruler descended from enormous wealth, one of three brothers whose inherited gold was famously divided by equal mouthfuls.

Yet possession does not end desire.

His story begins with a question that fits this point in the agricultural year remarkably well:

Who gets a share?

The harvest has begun.
The moon has begun growing.
Berkana preserves life.
Ur possesses the strength to reach for it.

And from the mountains comes a being who intends to take what he believes he is owed.

We don’t yet know what that claim will cost.
