What Will Your Strength Protect?

Daily Reckoning for Ur — Friday, September 18, 2026

This month’s underworld series continues with Helgi and Sigrún, at the meeting after battle: Sigrún has chosen Helgi, and now we meet the man she chooses. Today’s reckoning brings Ur’s strength into Haustmánuður’s work of gathering and keeping, beneath a First Quarter Moon and within the Berkana year. The question is what courage can protect when love and family loyalty pull against one another.

Ur — The Man She Chooses

Helgi is Sigmund’s son, raised within a feud. Before Sigrún comes to him, he has killed Hunding and fought Hunding’s sons. She finds him resting after battle, puts her arms around his neck, and kisses him.

She tells him she has been promised to Höðbrodd, though her heart belongs elsewhere. She fears her family’s anger. Helgi answers that he does not fear her kin.

His courage is plain. So is the difficulty inside it: the people he is prepared to face are people to whom she belongs. Ur gives today’s reading its force—the ability to stand, endure, and act. Sigrún’s choice asks what that force will mean once it enters her life.

Haustmánuður — Keeping What Must Last

Haustmánuður brings the reading into the work of harvest. Gathering requires effort; keeping the harvest requires care. What has been won must still be carried, stored, and protected from loss.

Helgi knows how to fight. A shared future will require him to consider what survives the fighting. Today, give some of your strength to tending what is already in your hands: food, a home, a relationship, work another person depends upon.

First Quarter Moon — A Choice Takes Shape

The Moon reaches First Quarter today, on the calendar’s ninth lunar day. In this reckoning, its growing light accompanies a choice becoming visible through action.

Sigrún comes to Helgi herself. She tells him what she wants and what she fears. Their meeting gives the story direction, while leaving its consequences unresolved. An intention becomes more serious when someone else begins arranging their life around it.

Berkana — A Future That Needs Care

Berkana holds the wider reading around growth and the conditions that allow it. A beginning remains vulnerable even when the people making it are brave.

Helgi’s confidence answers one part of Sigrún’s fear. Her divided loyalties ask for attention too. To protect a future together, he must understand what that future may cost her.

Near the Autumn Equinox

Four days remain before the equinox. The seasonal setting turns attention toward what can be sustained through the coming change. Strength spent today should leave something sound for tomorrow.

The Unified Dynamic

Ur supplies the power to act. Haustmánuður asks what that effort preserves. The First Quarter gives a choice outward form, while Berkana keeps its vulnerable future in view.

Helgi and Sigrún stand at the beginning of a life they want, surrounded by obligations already in place. Today’s reckoning asks you to consider everyone affected by the protection you offer.

Living the Reckoning

Choose one responsibility that needs your strength today. Ask the person affected what would help before deciding for them. Then do one concrete thing: finish the repair, carry your share of the work, or make time for the difficult conversation. Let the result of your effort be something they can rely upon.

Turning Toward Tomorrow

We follow their choice into the danger surrounding it. Sigrún’s power to protect Helgi will become clearer, along with the cost of the conflict drawing them together.

Sources

The story follows The Second Lay of Helgi Hundingsbane, especially the prose before stanza 13 and stanzas 13–16, in Henry Adams Bellows’s translation of the Poetic Edda. Calendar positions follow the Galdorcraft reckoning for September 18; the First Quarter date is also listed in Griffith Observatory’s 2026 Moon phases. The combined reading is a contemporary Galdorcraft interpretation.

By Giles Charlé

I’m Giles Charlé, the maker behind Galdorcraft Calendars. I build calendars based on historical Northern European systems of timekeeping—bringing together lunar months, seasonal markers, feast days, runes, agriculture, and the long cycles that shaped how people once understood the year. What began as an attempt to understand old calendars more clearly became a larger project: reconstructing them in a form that can actually be used. Galdorcraft is about making those systems legible again—not as museum pieces, but as working calendars you can hold, read, and return to year after year. The Daily Reckoning grew out of that same work. Each day I follow where we stand within the larger cycle: the rune, moon, lunar month, season, year, historical calendar markers, and the stories that belong to that particular place in time.
