Thorn is pressure, resistance, and the force that pushes back when something has been pressed too far. The old king sees strength and beauty as things he can possess and exploit. What he fails to understand is where that strength comes from.
The women remember their lineage: the Slave-Binder, the Eagle of Death, the Roarer. Their strength belongs to mountains, grinding stones, battlefields, and a world where women can throw spears, redden swords, and bring rulers down.
We are also in the final days of Heyannir, the Hay Month. The season itself has been worked hard. The grass has been cut, dried, gathered, and stored. After Fehu’s wealth and Ur’s bodily strength, Thorn introduces resistance: how long can something be forced to produce before it pushes back?
Over the entire reckoning stands Berkana ᛒ, the Year Rune. Growth, generation, and the power by which something living comes into being. Here, Berkana takes a darker form: the king values what these women can produce, while failing to understand the deeper source from which their power was born.
